Jamile walked up wearily to the old watch tower. She wasn't particularly enjoying herself on the island; she had been through too much and didn't think that this was the best way to go.
She wante to be back with her mother, her brother Omar, but they were both dead. Jamila didn't know what had become of her father; he had abandoned her a few years ago, when Omar had died, long after her parents divorced.
She watched desparately, waiting for something to happen, waiting for some ship to come so that she could sneak off this island for good.
She had met some nice people; Chace, for one, and Sam. But even their lively attitudes weren't enough to bring Jamila out of her depressive stage.

Chace had noticed Jamila's depression, and had seen her walk up towards the watch tower. Unbeknown to her, he had followed, watching as she gazed out at the ocean. Her body language told him she needed a friend...
"Looking for a way out, huh?" he said softly as he stepped out from the shadows.

Jamila jumped unexpectedly as Chace appeared behind her. She blushed; hoping that he wouldn't figure out that she was planning to run away.
"I-umm... I'm just admiring the view," she said, knowing that Chace would be able to sense her lie. After a few moments, she finally said, in a whisper, "How do you do it? How can you act as if everything's okay?"

Chace half laughed, then walked over to stand by her side, also gazing out across the water. He knew that she was lying, and wondered how best to approach her about this without seeming insensitive.
He decided not to say anything. As she spoke again, he turned to look at her, hesitating for a moment. "I've had a lot of time to get used to it. I lived on the streets for a while, so, you know... but for me there are two choices: try and get on with my life, or let the depression take me. I've tried both routes, and this is the one I find easiest." His voice was quiet - it had been a while since he'd spoken about his time alone...

"Everyone I love is now dead, or gone," she marvelled. "It's kind of... funny in a way. That I'm still here, I mean. My dad left us when my brother died... and I don't know anything about him anymore. I don't know whether he's alive, either, but it's foolish to try and find him, anyway. He never loved me like he did my brother... maybe that's why he stopped coming,"
Jamila had never told this to anyone else; when she was at school, she pretty much secluded herself from the others. Most people pitied her, others just got fed up.

Chace nodded slowly. Stepping in closer to her, he rested his hand on the wooden barrier, and looked towards her. "It's the same for me. My real parents died when I was a baby, so I never really knew much about them. I was adopted young, but about a year ago my adopted parents just sort of disappeared. They went on vacation and never returned, so I just presume that they're dead. They loved me, but I never really showed them the same affection. I think it was due to bitterness - I knew they weren't my real parents, so I just couldn't make the bond. When they disappeared, I took to the streets, taking as much stuff as I could carry, which was a lot. I managed to find an old abandoned house, and meddled eith the generator so I had hot water and electricity. Social services found me and brought me here."
His gaze switched so that he was looking out at the ocean once more.

"Wow... that's even more tragic than my story," said Jamila, laughing feebly to lighten up the tense atmosphere.
"You were right," she said, after a moment's silence. "I'm trying to run away,"

Chase just laughed lightly. He shrugged, and said "I don't see it as tragic really, just my bad luck catching up on me, but I get by." He looked into her eyes for a moment, his face smoothed of all expression. He remained silent for a while, then his voice was soft "Well, if you really want to run away, then I could help you. But I think you should stay, at least for a while. It might be for the best - this could be the break you've been searching for." He stepped in even closed to her, his hand sliding along the barrier so that it rested on top of hers.

Jamila gasped quietly as Chace approached her, resting his hand on top of hers. He was close- too close, and she was having difficulty thinking straight.
"I could stay a few weeks," she said finally, her voice really quiet. She raised her head to look Chace directly in the eyes; big mistake. She couldn't find it in herself to look away, and she wondered what he was seeing her her own eyes. Could he sense how desperate she was?

Chace smiled, and nodded slowly. "That would be nice." he whispered, his face just inches from hers. He could sense the obvious fear she held, yet also the feelings she had for him. He leaned in slowly, and for the briefest moment, his lips touched hers, ever so gently, before he pulled away slowly, his eyes still locked onto hers.

Jamila had not expected Chace to do what he just did; although she would never tell him, he had just given her her first kiss. It was... sensational. Too soon, he pulled away, though, leaving Jamila with a frown upon her face when he pulled back.
She wondered why a guy like Chace would be interested in a girl like Jamila. For one thing, she wasn't confident and breathtakingly beautiful, or what a guy generally looked for in a girl. She wasn't ugly, either, but she just never considered herself to be an object of affection to someone like Chace, who looked as though he could get with any girl he wanted.
"Why did you do that?" she said stupidly, not thinking about it. She didn't mean the words to be words of rejection; she was head over heels over Chace. She just needd to know why...

Chace stepped back, a frown on his face too now. He could not understand it - Jamila obviously felt for him, so then why had she been so upset at his actions. He raised both his hands in his defence and stammered "I'm sorry, I thought- never mind. I- sorry."
His words were rushed, and sounded pretty lame, but his surprise at her reaction had his head in a spin. Nobody had ever rejected him like that before, and he felt a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach - did she not find him attractive?
His self confidence had taken a great blow. He looked up at her once more, and turned towards the stairs. "I should go-" he muttered.

"No!" Jamila blurted out suddenly. She moved over to where Chace had turned to, and said, "I didn't mean it like that. I didn't not want you to do it, I just wondered why." and before she could stop herself, she added, "No-one's ever done that to me before,"

Chace turned back towards her, and his smile returned. He nodded slowly, and whispered "Because you're beautiful." He rested his hand on her cheek once more, and brushed some hair from off her face. He looked deep into her eyes before saying "Well I'm glad I had the priviledge of providing that experience."

Jamila blushed fiercly; she could practically feel her cheeks gain colour. No-one had ever called her beautiful before. She stood on her tiptoes so that she could kiss Chace again.
